Bulgaria's Report Card Launch

Bulgarian TACTICS partner Bulgaria UNICEF and the Open Society Institute hosted a launch of Bulgaria's child safety report card on June 12 at an event which took place at the Sofia Community Prevention Center "Krasna Polyana."

Senior representatives from over 20 leading institutions working on children's well-being, including Bulgaria UNICEF, Ministry of Interior, State Agency for Child Protection, The Open Society Institute, the National Child Network and other NGOs and local authorities, attended. After hearing a presentation on the report card results for Bulgaria, they held an open discussion centered on action needed to improve child safety in Bulgaria.

In his opening speech, the town mayor underlined the need to act locally and to design injury prevention policies targeted at the most vulnerable children like the Roma.

The consensus of the discussions was that a national forum should be organized to mobilise policy support and design Bulgaria's strategy for improvement. It is estimated that over 200 children's lives could be saved annually in Bulgaria with implementation of more child protection strategies.

During the presentation at the Community Center, children received information on road and fire safety, and created paintings on the themes which were then displayed to the attendees and journalists present.

At the close of the event, several participants took part in interviews and conversations with journalists, and over 20 national and regional media outlets reported on the report cards and the event. A thorough feature story on the event also appeared on Press TV, Bulgaria's English language television news.
